October 3: Commemoration of the Transitus of St. Francis

St. Francis of Assisi died in the evening of Oct. 3, 1226. On this day every year, in the evening, Franciscans gather to remember the transitus (“passing”) of St. Francis from darkness into light. The format of the ceremony varies from place to place. It usually entails reciting of the story of the death of St. Francis according to his first biographer, Thomas of Celano, the singing of hymns, and gospel passages.

So tonight, around the world, Franciscan Friars, Sisters, Seculars Religious, 3^rd Order Franciscan and people who love St. Francis will gather to remember this transition in the life of Francis in this prayer service called Transitus. Death was not something that simply “happened” to Francis, but a human reality that the saint of Assisi embraced as his sister. In the song which he wrote praising God for creation, Francis added the line:

“All praise be yours, my Lord, through Sister Death, From whose embrace no mortal can escape. Woe to those who die in mortal sin! Happy those she finds doing your will! The second death can do them no harm. Praise and bless my Lord, and give him thanks. And serve him with great humility.”

Of course Saint Francis and all Franciscan events are very Marian and one such place to experience the Transitus is in a little known well-kept former Polish Chapel , Saint Adalbert’s , in an enclave of the Franciscan Friars of The Renewal adjacent to their Saint Crispen’s Friary in the Melrose section of the Bronx, NY – Unlike other Catholic events where the convivium is after the liturgy and /or prayer service the convivium at a Transitus is always before (this one starting btwn 7:00pm and 7:30pm) – It is then proper to leave after the end of the prayers in a darkened Church in silence. This simulates again the passing of St. Francis proper to the Vigil and an opportunity for the religious of the community to silently renew their convictions to their vows
