A plenary indulgence can be gained for the Pilgrimage to 1st Class Relic on tour if gained in a state of grace under the normal conditions and can be gained for the living or the dead

What an indulgence is not

It is not an exemption from any law or duty 

Not is it a remission for multiple sins but one sin of your own or that of your Dead

There are different types of Indulgences with different kinds of jurisdictions

Plenary Indulgences for the dead for instance would obviously have no affect on temporal punishment since the person has already passed and temporal punishment only apply to the living

Plenary Indulgences petitions petitions God to accept these works of satisfaction and in consideration thereof to mitigate or shorten the sufferings of the souls in Purgatory.

And that is all that a Plenary Indulgence can ever do is lessen the sentence it can never mitigate all the sins a person sentenced to Purgatory has committed

It could potentially take generations for the those sentenced to Purgatory to be remitted of the many sins committed

The Indulgences the living gain while on earth to reduce temporal punishment is something all together different –

For the sins we have committed we will pay in the eternal realm – all of it

As in Matthew 5:26
