This important Feast was first introduced into the Church by the Spaniards in the decades following the protestant reformation In the 1800s this Feast was credited for uniting the various Kingdoms of Italy – north and south and in 1933 it was raised to the level of a Double First Class Feast for the entire Universal Church – It was of course suppressed from the Calendar by the Vatican II Council due to it’s focus on infallible Catholic theology that  the Blood of Christ is precious because it is Christ’s own great ransom paid for the redemption of mankind, which is no longer the focus of Catholicism in the new rite Mass and the new Rite theology

This Feast is still celebrated by the Dominican Rite Liturgy- The Ambrosian Rite and the Tridentine Rite – with specific amazing gregorian hymns in the Liturgies and Divine Office breviaries of the Old Rites and specific to this Feast
